Soundscape

This soundscape project was a good excuse to familiarize myself with GarageBand. I initially created the beat on the GarageBand app on my phone, but quickly realized that the iOS version of the software was pretty limiting for some of the things I wanted to do with my sound. I transferred my project over to a school computer and completed my soundscape from there. Moving to the computer allowed me to control volume points on my sound clips and add new tracks with a midi keyboard which was so fun to mess around with. During this process I thought about the McLuhan quote, "Young people are looking for a formula for putting on the universe—participation mystique. They do not look for detached patterns—for ways of relating themselves to the world, a la nineteenth century." I wasn't considering much how other people would feel when listening to my sound, I was purely making what I thought sounded interesting. I thought about my connection to a fantasy world I was creating through the sounds I chose. I felt like I was maybe in an electronic version of outer-space, or some sort of online dimension.

This is how my soundscape looked on my iPhone.

  1. I enjoy how you countered McLuhan's concept of searching for formulas by creating your own more free form experimentation. I liked the sound of this piece a lot, and I agree that it gives a sort of sci-fi feeling!
